The Wind River and Absaroka country, especially in Dubois, received very high residential bear encounters. Because of the drought plaguing the west and hampering their natural food sources, at least four bears, including a Grizzly bear worked their way towards their only reliable food source…. human food and garbage. Unfortunately, because of these encounters the bears had to be destroyed by the Wyoming Game and Fish Department as the risk to human populations were too great. In one case, a black bear entered the kitchen of a Dubois residential home through the screen back door, ransacking the house looking for food. Fortunately, bears usually prefer nothing to do with humans and encounters are extremely rare in the backcountry much less at home!
